The interdisciplinary conference series Paderborn
Podium was launched in 1998

the then Federal President Roman Herzog. Since that
time renowned scientists and practitioners from
Germany and abroad have met at specially arranged

Education
in the Information Age |
|
The first Paderborn Podium was dedicated to "Education
in the Information Age". Our transition from
an industrial society into an information society
is characterised by a varied, globally linked
and fast changing world. What kind of values,
knowledge and skills does the young generation
need to be prepared for the complex challenges
of the next century. The answer from the Federal
President Roman Herzog was both a vision as well
as request. He gave guidelines and showed possible
solutions for today's education.

Life
in the Future - Information Technology changes our
Life |
|
The key question of the conference was how information
technology will change our every day life in the
next five to ten years - and beyond. How will future
generations live and work? How will they spend their
spare time? How will they do their shopping and
how will they commute? Leading scientists from different
fields reported on future technologies and the effects
these technologies will have on us.

Faith
in a scientific orientated Society |
|
"Faith and Knowledge" are age-old topics
for humanity. The explanatory function of the religious
conceptions of the world have been replaced by scientific
explanations. The transformation of our community
into a scientific orientated society seem to have
increased the importance of knowledge and science.
Natural science has found its was into the "last
secrets", like the origin of the universe or
the structure of life.

Computer.Brain
and Consciousness |
|
At the start of a new millennium many people are
sensitized for questions on future topics. Computer,
brain and consciousness are terms that create a
range of different associations and ideas in this
subject. Fascinating results of the latest research
in the field of artificial intelligence, robotics
and brain research provide new aspects for the relation
between computer and brain. What abilities do humans
have? What are computers capable of doing? International
experts were taking stock at the beginning of the
third millennium and presented the current status
of research.
